What is tummy tuck surgery?Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A large number of people suffer from surplus fat deposits, lax muscles, and sagging skin in the abdominal region. This gives the body an uneven and unattractive appearance.

At times, the fat deposits may be stubborn and not respond to exercise and diet. Fat in the abdominal area may not always develop because of unhealthy eating habits or an inactive lifestyle. It can also occur due to genetic reasons or as an after-effect of pregnancy.

In such cases, where the abdominal fat is unresponsive to diet and exercise, and the patient is unhappy with the stomach’s uneven contour, the surgeon may advise a tummy tuck plastic surgery. The surgeon can safely re-contour and reshape the abdominal region by tightening loose muscles and removing surplus skin and fat with a tummy tuck surgery.

Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin, provides tummy tuck surgery to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and other neighborhoods and communities in this region of the country.

Ideal Candidates

Individuals with one or more of the following issues may be suitable candidates for a tummy tuck plastic surgery:

  • Lax or loose skin in the upper or lower stomach area.
  • Surplus fat deposits or excess skin after pregnancy with no short-term plans for another child.
  • Prominent belly.
  • Weakened and separated abdominal muscles that are unresponsive to toning exercises.
  • Surplus skin due to significant weight loss.

Procedure

As per the circumstances of a specific case, the surgeon will perform the tummy tuck procedure under IV sedation or general anesthesia. The surgeon will explain the anesthesia options during the initial consultation and arrive at a decision before the surgery.

At the onset of the surgery, the surgeon places a horizontal incision in the region between the navel and pubic hairline. The amount of skin and fat to be eliminated will determine the shape and length of the incision.

Through the incision, the surgeon will address weak abdominal muscles and make them tighter. They will also remove surplus tissue, skin, and fat to provide an appealing stomach contour. In case there is surplus loose skin in the upper portion of the abdomen, the surgeon may need to place a second incision. After the surgery is complete, the incisions will be sealed via skin adhesives or sutures.

A tummy tuck will provide a slimmer and firmer abdominal contour which is proportional to the patient’s body shape, size, and weight. Bruising and inflammation will dissipate in the following few weeks. The full outcomes will be apparent as healing progresses. A majority of patients can resume their normal routine within one week of the surgery.

Partial Tummy tuck

Mini abdominoplasty or partial tummy tuck is more suitable for patients who require a limited correction and tightening of muscles in certain areas around the tummy. The procedure typically corrects the lower abdomen area. This surgery is also useful after a weight fluctuation or as a revision procedure after a primary surgery.

Successful plastic surgeons at VIPS receive patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and nearby areas.
