The Ideal Facelift Candidate

You’re a great candidate for a surgical facelift if you’re interested in a way to correct the unwelcome signs of aging, rejuvenate your appearance, and enhance the natural contours and harmony of your face. By lifting and tightening the underlying facial tissues and musculature, and eliminating the presence of unwanted fat cells or loose, sagging skin, the facelift can effectively turn back the clock on your appearance. Despite the advent of non-surgical facelift options, which do offer minor, temporary enhancement, a surgical facelift remains the most powerful, most effective way to address the signs of aging and deliver long-term rejuvenation. Surgical techniques have advanced considerably in recent years, and Drs. Burton and Reps Sundin remain committed to the advanced surgical techniques that yield naturalistic results.

The Benefits of a Facelift at the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery

Facelift surgery remains the most powerful, long-term option for individuals seeking to correct the visible signs of facial aging.

A facelift may be an ideal solution for individuals seeking to correct:

  • “Laugh lines” or other prominent lines, wrinkles, and creases along the nasolabial folds
  • Lines and wrinkles underneath the eyes
  • Wrinkles and creases underneath the nose and on the upper lip
  • Sagging, drooping skin around the eyes and cheeks (ptosis)
  • Unwanted fatty deposits that create the appearance of asymmetry
  • Submental fullness (“double chin”) or “jowls” caused by aging muscle tone, excess fat, and/or loose skin

Your Facelift Experience

Facelift surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or IV sedation. The duration of your procedure will depend heavily on the degree of correction required, the type of facelift technique that will be employed, and whether or not ancillary procedures will be performed simultaneously. During your consultation, you’ll be given a detailed understanding of what you can expect on the day of your facelift surgery, so you can enjoy total peace of mind as you prepare to enjoy your final surgical outcome.

During the procedure, Dr. Sundin will create a series of incisions in your facial skin, giving himself access to the underlying structures. Great care will be taken to hide the incisions in your hairline and the natural contours of your face, to reduce the possibility of visible scarring. For a complete facelift, the incisions will follow the hairline from the temples to the lower scalp, around the top of the ear. Any and all incision placement will be discussed with you before your surgery, so you’ll know what to expect in terms of scarring.

Once the proper incisions have been made, Dr. Burton Sundin or Dr. Reps Sundin will lift and reposition your facial tissues according to your surgical plan, while also ensuring that the underlying musculature is manipulated in a way that leaves you looking youthful and refreshed. Any unwanted excess skin will be trimmed away, and excess fat cells will be removed, as well. Once the required corrections have been made, Dr. Sundin will utilize dissolving sutures to meticulously close the incisions made for surgery.

The procedure itself typically takes between three and four hours to complete and will be performed in an accredited surgical center. You’ll be able to return home on the same day of your surgery, but you’ll need a friend to drive you as your anesthesia wears off. Since general anesthesia will be employed, you will remain asleep for the duration of the procedure and will not feel a thing while Dr. Sundin performs the surgery. Once you wake up, you’ll spend a short amount of time in a recovery area before heading home.

Customizing Your Facelift

Due to their extensive training and impressive level of surgical skill, Drs. Sundin can customize your facelift procedure, combining it with ancillary treatments that will further enhance the results you’re able to show off to the world. During your consultation, we invite you to explore the possibility of combining your facelift with additional surgical and non-surgical procedures, such as:

  • Brow or forehead lift
  • Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)
  • Fat grafting or facial implants
  • Neck lift
  • Use of injectables and/or dermal fillers
  • Non-surgical techniques to enhance the elasticity, texture, and surface of the skin

The “Uplift” Facelift Technique

Our Uplift facelift option offers you a deeper level of correction, by including a deep muscle suspension of the neck alongside the lifting and smoothing over of the middle and lower facial regions. This technique comes with minimal downtime and is a favorite among our patients due to minimal scarring.

The “Limited” Facelift Technique

For those who are interested in minimal correction, the limited facelift is ideal. Smaller incisions are made along the hairline, at the temple, above the ear, and occasionally under the upper lip. Once the underlying structures have been lifted, excess fatty deposits readjusted or removed, and excess skin excised, the incisions are carefully closed.

Rest and Recovery After a Facelift

The most common side effects of facelift surgery are facial swelling and bruising, which usually peak during the first 24 to 48 hours. These side effects are quite normal, however, and you’ll be given everything you need to remain comfortable during your recovery period. During this time, we encourage you to keep your head elevated as much as possible.

Most people find they need to take at least one to two weeks away from work to allow the bruising to fully disappear, although minor facial swelling can linger for up to a month after surgery. You’ll be provided with a detailed recovery timeline and thorough aftercare instructions before the actual day of your surgery.

Our team will remain available to you throughout your recovery process, and we’ll schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that you’re comfortable and that your healing process is continuing nicely. This will also give you a chance to ask us any questions that you might have about your final results and remaining recovery period.
