Breast Implant Plastic Surgery Recovery

Tag Archives: plastic surgery

Any woman considering breast augmentation plastic surgery should budget adequate time for the recovery phase.

The patient can experience a relaxed and healthy recovery period if she avoids vigorous activities in the early recovery phase and follows the surgeon’s guidelines closely and diligently.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by focused board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides breast implant surgery to patients in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Tysons Corner, Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and other suburbs and communities in this region of the nation.

Estimated Recovery Period

Surgeons usually advise patients to restrict their movement and get sufficient rest immediately after breast augmentation surgery. The patient should not undertake lifting, bending, or straining as these activities can cause delays in healing and increase discomfort.

Patients who do not have to perform strenuous activities at work may return to their workplace in around one week. But if the work demands aggressive movement, the patient may need to take a more extended leave before resuming work. The surgeon can help the patient determine a safe time to return to work.

The recovery period depends largely on the implant placement technique used. The subglandular breast implant placement which involves placing the implants above the pectoral muscles has a briefer recovery period in comparison to patients who receive implant placement via the submuscular breast implant technique (the placement of the implant beneath the pectoral muscle).

The surgeon will offer the patient precise guidelines for making their breast augmentation recovery period as brief and as comfortable as possible. The breast enhancement plastic surgery outcomes will provide the patient years of satisfaction if she follows the surgeon’s guidelines with commitment.

The Initial Two Weeks

In the initial 24 to 48 hours following breast augmentation surgery, patients commonly experience breast pain and fatigue which can make recovery uncomfortable during this period.

While the surgeon may prescribe meds to manage the pain, most patients continue to experience soreness and discomfort during this period. The patient should ideally have a spouse, friend, or family member assist them with household chores and aftercare at this time.

The surgeon will apply gauze dressings to the breasts right after the procedure. These bandages will be removed in the following days and replaced with a special surgical bra. The surgeon may remove the sutures after one week to ten days, if necessary.

First Few Months

During the first few weeks after the breast enhancement procedure, the breasts will be quite sensitive. The patient may also experience inflammation in this area for up to five weeks. She should avoid any physical contact with her breasts until the sensitivity reduces to decrease the risk of injury and delayed healing.

Patients should not undertake vigorous activities or exercise for around a month after the procedure. It is essential for the patient not to be impatient regarding resuming her physical activity regimen. Disallowing sufficient time for recovery can cause injury to the breasts leading to a more extended recovery phase.

It can also impact the final outcomes of the procedure. Patients considering breast augmentation surgery should discuss the recovery phase in detail with their plastic surgeon to develop an in-depth understanding of the time commitment associated with this procedure.

Top Plastic Surgery Procedures

shutterstock_108940685Until a few decades ago, plastic surgery procedures were presumed to be the exclusive domain of celebrities and film personalities. However, advancements in surgical techniques and technology made these procedures safer, more accessible and more affordable. Millions of Americans now enjoy the benefits of cosmetic invasive and non-invasive procedures every year.

Although many of these procedures are still sought after only women, but men are now increasingly becoming conscious about enhancing their physical appearance and are choosing cosmetic treatments.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified and prolific plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin, provides cutting edge cosmetic and reconstructive procedures to patients in Richmond, Virginia, and surrounding communities.

Wide Acceptability

Patient feedback for most of the plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures is highly positive, which encourages many more people to consider these treatments to improve their body image and self-esteem.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has revealed in its latest multi-specialty statistical report that Americans spent over $15 billion on invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures in 2016. This represents a jump of 11 percent over 2015.

Nearly 56 percent of these procedures were related to plastic surgery, while 44 percent were non-surgical procedures. The figure of $15 billion is the biggest amount spent on these treatments in a year ever since ASAPS instituted its annual Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank Statistics survey nearly two decades ago.

According to ASAPS, the aesthetic aspirations of Americans are undergoing a rapid change, and more people now want to choose subtle and refined cosmetic treatments. For instance, many women now prefer to undergo fat transfer breast enhancement procedure in place of traditional breast implants to make the results appear less obvious. Similarly, the popularity of breast lift is on the rise because the procedure is more subtle than breast implants.

But this trend does not reflect on the popularity of breast augmentation surgery. In absolute terms, more women still prefer breast implant surgery, and it continues to rank as the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US after liposuction.

Surgeries once considered niche, such as vaginal rejuvenation, are now becoming mainstream. Men’s procedures, ranging from double chin reduction to dermal fillers, are also gaining popularity.

Five Most In-Demand Procedures

The five most sought-after procedures in 2016, according to the ASAPS data, for both women and men combined, include:

  • Liposuction – 414,335 procedures
  • Breast Augmentation – 310,444 procedures
  • Tummy Tuck – 181,540 procedures
  • Eyelid Surgery – 173,883 procedures
  • Breast Lift – 161,412 procedures

Liposuction currently ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure. It is designed to reduce targeted fat pockets in the upper and lower body.

Breast Augmentation

Both traditional breast implant surgery and fat transfer breast augmentation continue to gain in popularity among American women.

Tummy Tuck

Not just women, but now men too want to choose tummy tuck or abdominoplasty to attain a flatter and firmer abdomen.

Eyelid Surgery

Upper and lower eyelid surgery can significantly enhance the appearance of the eyes and upper face.

Breast Lift

Breast lift is designed to firm up sagging breasts and raise the position of downward pointing nipples.

Ultherapy in Richmond, Virginia

The Non-invasive Solution to Lift, Tighten and Tone Skin on the Face and Neck

It’s been featured on national television shows such as

Rachael Ray, The View and The Doctors. It’s been touted by big-name beauty editors from Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Shape

and more…

It’s Ultherapy, a non-surgical face and neck treatment that uses ultrasound to actually lift and tone loose skin — on the brow, on the neck and under the chin — without any downtime. And, it’s offered here in Richmond, Virginia at The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery.

Ultherapy Uses Ultrasound?

That’s right! Ultherapy is the only cosmetic procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows us to actually see the layers of tissue we target during the treatment, to ensure that the energy is delivered precisely to where it will be most effective.

Leveraging this tried-and-true technology, we can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin – the one typically addressed in cosmetic surgery – without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. That means after a 90-minute

treatment, you’ll be able to return to your everyday life without interruptions…and, without hiding behind those “post-treatment” glasses or scarves.

Ultherapy Creates Collagen and Elastin Naturally

Ultherapy is so unique because it refreshes your collagen by jumpstarting a repair process. It relies on the body’s own regenerative process to stimulate the natural creation of new collagen and elastin – yes, new collagen and elastin. This results in an actual lift of skin overtime – and just better-fitting skin.

Many people notice an immediate effect following the treatment, but the ultimate lifting and toning takes place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is replaced with new, stronger collagen. And, as this collagen-building process continues, further improvements can even appear up to 6 months following a procedure!

Ultherapy – an Uplift not a Facelift

Ultherapy is a non-surgical option for people with mild to moderate skin laxity – those who want some lifting for skin that has lost elasticity, but are not ready for surgery, either mentally, financially or logistically. It’s also a great option for those who want to “stay ahead of the game” as well as those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery.

Ultherapy may cause some discomfort while the energy is being delivered, but it is temporary and a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Of course, we offer a number of options to help make your Ultherapy treatment as comfortable as possible. Our patients who’ve had Ultherapy typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come!

If you’re looking for a lift to counter the effects that gravity takes over time, it may be just the treatment you’ve been waiting for.
