Types of Breast ImplantsTypes of Breast Implants

Breast implants are available in different qualities, sizes and shapes. The choice of implants will have an impact on the final appearance of the breasts in a breast implant plastic surgery.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS), led by board certified plastic surgeons, provides breast implant surgery to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding locations in this part of the country.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants contain sterilized salt water. In the event of implant shell leaks, an implant holding saline water will collapse, allowing the body to absorb it and expel it naturally.

Saline breast implants offer a uniform tautness, shape, and feel. These implants have been approved by the FDA for augmenting breasts in women aged 18 years and over. Structured breast implants are a variant with a special inner structure to help the implants feel natural to the patient.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants contain silicone gel in their inner core. The feel of this gel is like the natural breast tissue. In case of an implant leak, the gel will be held in the implant shell. Alternatively, it may leak into the breast implant pocket. However, a silicone gel implant that leaks will not collapse.

You will need to visit your breast surgeon periodically (if you choose silicone implants) to ensure that the implants are functioning optimally. Screening of these implants using MRI or ultrasound can gauge their state. The FDA has approved silicone breast implant plastic surgery for women aged 22 or above.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Gummy bear implants are form-stable implants as they retain their shape under pressure and are more resilient. They mimic the breast tissue closely.

These gummy bear implants are wider in the bottom and narrow down towards the top. However, if this type of form shaped implant moves from its position, it can cause an unnatural look in the breast which may warrant a corrective procedure.

The placement of the gummy bear breast implants requires the surgeon to place a longer incision in the breast skin (compared to saline implants).

Round Breast Implants

Round breast implants will provide the breasts will a fuller appearance than form-stable implants. Higher profile alternatives can offer even more projection. Since round implants have a uniform shape, they are less likely to rotate and distort the shape of the breast.

Smooth and Textured Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants feel very soft. These implants have more natural movement as they are aligned with the movement of the breast implant pocket.

Textured breast implant produce scar tissue, which attaches itself to the implant. This improves their stability in the breast reducing the possibility of shape distortion or movement from its desired position.

This type of breast implant reduces the chances of the complication of a tight scar capsule. Furthermore, implant makers sometimes come out with variations in the styles and kinds of textured implants to provide more alternatives.

It is vital for you to periodically monitor your breast implants and consult with your plastic surgeon for regular check-ups regardless of whether you decide on silicone or saline implants.
