According to ASAPS research figures, breast implant plastic surgery procedure presently ranks as Risks and Safety of Breast Implant Surgerythe second most sought-after procedure after liposuction in the US. The rates of success in breast implant procedures have improved significantly over the years. Many women now feel encouraged to consider breast implants.

However, the procedure involves some specific risks and a few general risks associated with any surgical procedures. During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will inform the patient about the advantages and limitations of the breast implant procedure as well as its risks. A dedicated surgeon’s primary goal will be to enable the patient to make a well-considered choice.

Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin, provides breast implant surgery to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and other cities and communities in this area of the Atlantic coastline.

Risks Specific to Breast Implants

Certain risks are specific to breast implant plastic surgery as it involves the surgical placement of silicone or saline implants in the breast tissue.

Capsular Contracture

After the breast implant is inserted into the tissue, it will stimulate the body’s natural immune reaction. This will cause scar tissue to form around the implant. In some cases, the scar tissue may become hard or contract to exert excess pressure on the implant. The reasons for this complication are mostly unknown.

The outer silicone shell of the breast implant will be squeezed because of the scar tissue becoming tighter. This causes the implant to lose its shape, shift from its original place, or damage the outer shell of the implant. The patient may feel pain due to the hardening of the breast capsule. The surgeon may perform a breast implant removal or replacement surgery to correct this situation.

Implant Rippling

Patients should ideally select the size of the implant relative to the amount of skin that is available to cover the implant appropriately. In case the breast implant size is too large, it may cause the implant to develop creases or folds. This leads to a rippling appearance on the surface of the skin impacting the appearance of the breast.

The surgeon can mitigate this risk by assisting the patient in choosing the correct shape and size of implants relative to her specific breast anatomy as well as the availability of skin.

Implant Damage or Shifting

At times, the breast implant may move original position after the surgical procedure. The risk of such displacement is notably higher for large breast implants. However, the risk of implant damage or rupture is standard across all implant sizes and shapes. This condition may necessitate a breast revision surgery.

Surgical Risks

Infection

The risk of infection can be minimized if the breast implant procedure is undertaken at an accredited surgical venue that maintains a sterile environment for surgery. The patient must also prevent contamination exposure of the surgical areas to reduce the risk.

Numbness

A breast implant procedure may lead to sensitivity, numbness, or altered sensation in the nipple area. However, this condition resolves by itself in a majority of cases. In rare situations, the numbness may be prolonged or permanent.
