Fat Grafting Of The Hands

Hands can give away your age even if your face looks rejuvenated and young. Hand fat grafting or fat transfer to the hands is a safe and proven minimally invasive surgical technique for providing natural looking hand rejuvenation results.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS), led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides fat grafting of the hands local anesthesia procedure to patients in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia, and surrounding locations.

Understanding Hand Fat Transfer

Natural aging process causes changes in the appearance of the back of the hands. Extensor tendons become more prominent because of a loss of subcutaneous fat. There is also thinning of the skin that makes the extensor tendons and dorsal veins more easily visible. Long-term sun exposure accelerates the process.

Structural fat grafting is a superlative way to rejuvenate the hands. Your treatment provider will place fat in multiple tissue planes. This includes the intervals between the extensor tendons and the knuckles. The fat will be injected superficially under the skin for concealing extensor tendons and creating enhanced volume in the back of the hands.

Procedure for Hand Rejuvenation

The surgeon needs to know the delicate art of balancing the sides of the thumb and small fingers, back of the hands, and the knuckles and fingers for successful hand rejuvenation. Experienced surgeons will make use of innovative techniques for yielding satisfying results.

Fat transfer to hands is performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon will harvest fat from hips, flanks, and thighs. In some cases, the abdomen can also be used as a donor site. Fat is processed by a centrifuge after aspiration in 10cc syringes. A small layer of oil is collected on top and a small layer of anesthesia is collected at the bottom of the syringe after centrifugation. There is pure fat in the middle, which is harvested.

Each syringe provides 6 – 7 cc of fat that can be used for grafting. This fat is massaged gently into a smooth contour for masking the appearance of prominent veins and bones. It doesn’t take more than 30 minutes for performing the fat grafting procedure. Hand fat grafting can be combined with facial fat grafting and other procedures for enhanced results.

Results of Hand Fat Grafting

Fat survival is variable with every fat grafting procedure. Dramatic enhancement of the dorsal hand contour is achieved in majority of cases. However, it is possible that you may require a second or third fat grafting session for superior results. Generally, it takes about three months for the final results of the fat grafting procedure to become evident.

Structural fat grafting of the hands is recommended if you think that the back of your hands give away your age. You should make sure that you visit a plastic surgeon that is highly experienced in performing structural fat grafting. They should have prior experience of performing fat grafting of the hands as well. This will help you achieve the results you desire in a safe and predictable manner.

Cosmetic surgeons at VIPS receive patients from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia, and nearby areas for fat grafting of the hands local anesthesia procedure.
