You cannot appreciate Richmond fully without knowing the James River. Among the different vantage points within the James River Park System, a few stand out. Belle Isle has many rocks where you can view the river and its rapids. The island offers biking and running trails and is the Mecca for nature lovers.
In summer months, Pony Pasture Rapids Park is a wonderful area for swimming, canoeing, and inner tubing. Huguenot Flatwater Park, the westernmost park in the system, is an excellent launching area for paddling.
Black History Museum and Cultural Center
Located in the historically African-American Jackson Ward Historic District, the museum was constructed in 1895. Its red brick building was the only armory built in the city for an African-American militia unit. The museum now spans over 12,000 sq. ft., offering a treasure trove of African-American milestones.
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
This expansive museum houses Art Deco and Art Nouveau collections, a library and an art education center. It also has the sun-soaked Best Café on the first floor. Admission to permanent collections is free, and costs vary for special exhibits.
Libby Hill Park
Developed in the mid 19th century, Libby Hill Park is one of the first parks established in Richmond. The park is surrounded by stunning Italianate, Federal, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne houses. An ornamental fountain at the park is a hot spot for local residents and tourists alike.
