Breast implant removal plastic surgery, also known as explantation surgery, may become necessary in some cases. Complications such as implant rupture or capsular contracture may occur, which will leave you with no other option except implant removal or replacement. However, only a very small percentage of patients have to undergo breast implant removal because it is a medical necessity.
In a larger number of cases, the implants may have shifted from their position due to sagging breasts, or the patient may have a change of cosmetic goals and may want to have new implants of a different type or size, or may simply want to restore her natural breast appearance through breast implant removal and a breast lift surgery.
Board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin at Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery provide cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the breast, body, and face to patients in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia, and surrounding communities.
When performed as standalone surgery, breast implant removal is often a simple and relatively less invasive surgery. Following anesthesia, the plastic surgeon will create an incision to access and remove the implants from the breast pocket. The surgeon will aim to use the old incision from the time of primary breast augmentation so that any new scarring is minimized.
Other discreet incision sites may be beneath the breast crease or along the areolas. If the existing implants have suffered damage, leakage or rupture, the surgeon may consider performing an en bloc capsulectomy to remove the implant and the scar tissue together as one unit.
Once the implant has been taken out, the surgeon will complete the rest of the procedure, which could involve breast implant replacement or breast lift surgery. Sometimes the patient may not want a secondary procedure to be performed, but if the breast skin has sagged or stretched over time because of the previous implants, a breast lift may be required to restore tighter and firmer appearance of the breasts.
Benefits of Breast Implant Removal
If you have suffered from pain, discomfort, or are at a risk of breast implant illness or other complications, breast implant removal plastic surgery can provide you permanent relief from these conditions. If your previous implants are oversized and heavy, it may cause you neck, back, or shoulder pain at some stage.
Capsular contracture will also result in potential discomfort and tightness in the breast tissue. With breast implant removal surgery, you can eliminate these problems and restore your healthy and natural looking breasts.
Unless breast implant removal is a medical necessity, you will have to make a personal decision about whether you want to continue with your existing breast implants or remove or replace them.
If the implants have caused no complication, but you are unhappy with their size or shape, or feel concerned about breast implant illness, talk to your surgeon and review your options carefully before going ahead with breast implant removal surgery.
