Rediscover the Flat, Shapely Tummy of your Youth With a Tummy Tuck!

Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or even genetics can leave you with a flabby, sagging abdomen that does not improve no matter how much you diet and exercise.  Why is this area of the body so hard to reshape with simple lifestyle changes?  The answer lies not just in the accumulation of excess fat, but also in the fact that the skin and muscle in the area have lost elasticity, making it nearly impossible to achieve a flat, contoured abdomen.  The surgical solution to this common and frustrating problem is known as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), which not only reduces the excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen but also repairs the weakened, stretched-out muscle underneath.

A tummy tuck procedure is a complex and very personal decision for any patient to make.  You may be an appropriate candidate for an abdominoplasty procedure if:

  • You have excess fat, stretch marks, or skin in your abdomen that does not improve with diet and exercise.
  • The contour of your abdomen has changed after pregnancy or weight loss.
  • You have a protruding lower abdomen.

Tummy Tuck Patient Testimonial

Dr. Reps Sundin and Dr. Burton Sundin are Board Certified Plastic Surgeons who offer a wide array of surgical options to their patients at the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery in Richmond and Vienna, Virginia.  We treat each of our patients as an individual and will work closely with you to develop a surgical plan while taking into account your own specific goals.  We want you to be well informed about the factors that go into making a decision like having tummy tuck surgery.  We understand the great amount of trust you put into choosing your cosmetic surgeon and we do not take that lightly.

What You Can Expect From Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck procedure allows for the surgical removal of excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen and also for the repair of the muscle underneath.  The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes several hours to complete.  An overnight stay may be required.

We will provide you with all your postoperative care and directives prior to surgery so you will know exactly what to expect.  We will follow also you very closely in the immediate days after your surgical procedure and encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have.

When you wake up from surgery, your abdomen will be wrapped in a compression garment that helps minimize swelling.  Small drains are also usually placed to help your body get rid of excess fluid.  These drains are usually removed in about 5-7 days.  Most people take about 2 weeks off from work and other regular activities to recover, but your results will be noticeable immediately.*

Your Abdominoplasty Surgical Options

Tummy tuck procedures can vary depending on your specific needs.  After your consultation and examination, we will be able to give you more detailed explanation of the surgical options appropriate for your unique anatomy.  In general, abdominoplasty options include:

Full Abdominoplasty

You can expect an incision from hip bone to hip bone in the lower abdomen and a cutout incision around the belly button.  The excess skin and fat from the belly button down is removed and the abdominal muscle is repaired and tightened.

Extended Abdominoplasty

The extended tummy tuck is just like the full tummy tuck but the incision is made longer to address excess skin in the love handles or hips.

Mini Abdominoplasty

A single incision is made in the pubic area that is only a few inches long (similar to a C-Section scar) and muscle repair is usually minimal. This is ideal if you have limited laxity and fatty protrusion concentrated low in the abdomen.

Skin-Only Abdominoplasty

The incisions for this procedure mirror that of the full abdominoplasty but does not include the muscle repair.  This is perfect for patients whose core muscles are intact but who are struggling with excess skin and fat only.
