Rhinoplasty
The appearance of your nose is a major factor that determines how attractive you look. Rhinoplasty or surgery for reshaping the nose can help to enhance nose shape and size, and this makes it one of the five most popular forms of cosmetic surgery in the US today.
Every year, plastic surgeons in the US successfully perform more than 200,000 rhinoplasty surgeries. Although it is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes, rhinoplasty may also help to correct problems in nasal structure that hamper normal breathing.
The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides rhinoplasty (nose job) to patients in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia, and surrounding locations.
Rhinoplasty for Cosmetic Improvement
Through rhinoplasty, your surgeon can change the appearance of your nose to:
Narrow or widen the width of the nose at the nasal bridge Reduce or enhance nose size to make it proportionate to the shape and size of your face Diminish or eliminate visible depressions or humps on the nose bridge Sculpt nostrils that are upturned, flared, or wide to a better shape Correct asymmetry or deviation within the nose Refine nose tips that are upturned, droopy, oversized, or bulbous
Rhinoplasty Types
Different types of rhinoplasty are possible and based on your specific needs, your surgeon will choose from the following techniques:
Augmentation Rhinoplasty
A small nose can be made to look bigger using augmentation rhinoplasty. This involves building up the nose bridge or tip with bone or tissue grafting. Cartilage from the ribs or the nasal septum or synthetic implants may be used to increase the nose size.
Reduction Rhinoplasty
This technique reduces the size of the nose to make it appear in proportion with your other facial features, particularly the cheekbones and the chin. The surgery involves removing a small amount of cartilage and nasal bone. Your surgeon may also perform surgery to narrow the nasal tip, or reduce nasal bumps or reshape upturned or large nostrils if you so desire.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty
Surgeons can reconstruct the nose in patients who have lost it partially or fully in an injury or to skin cancer. This surgery uses synthetic implants, skin grafting and flap technique.
Post-Traumatic Rhinoplasty
When the nose has been severely injured, surgeons can perform a post-traumatic nose reshaping to restore both the function and appearance of the nose. This surgery generally involves repair of the fractured bone, nose-straightening and correction of the nasal septum.
Ethnic Rhinoplasty
This is a nose job to correct nasal peculiarities in persons from different ethnicities to give a more natural contour to the nose. Patients of Hispanic, African American, Asian, or Middle Eastern descent may choose this procedure to reshape the nose without a change of other facial features.
Recovery from Rhinoplasty
After your surgery, you may notice some bruising, soreness, or swelling in the operated area. This lasts for a few days and then resolves on its own. Your surgeon may prescribe drugs to relieve the pain. Most people recover from rhinoplasty after around 7 to 10 days of the procedure. Plastic surgeons at VIPS receive patients from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia, and nearby areas for nose job.
