Restore A Youthful Look With A Neck Lift

Some common signs of aging around the neck and jawline are skin beginning to sag or droop and excess fat collecting under the chin…but these issues don’t have to be permanent.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery team can sculpt and shape your neck and jawline with a neck lift in Northern Virginia to remove excess fat and skin around the jaw and upper neck. The underlying muscles are tightened, creating a more youthful and contoured appearance by addressing sagging skin, jowls, and a double chin.

  • Eliminating “turkey neck”
  • Creating an elegant, graceful appearance
  • Correcting a double or triple chin
  • Rejuvenating the entire neck and jawline

Pairing Your Neck Lift With a Facelift

Combining a facelift with a neck lift provides a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the face and neck. As we age, the skin on our face and neck can begin to sag and lose elasticity, resulting in jowls, wrinkles, and a double chin. A facelift not only rejuvenates the face, cheek, and jawline but also is the most effective means of rejuvenating a neck.  A facelift and neck lift really are performed in the same operation.  Just as in a facelift the key to an effective neck lift is addressing the deep muscular layer, called the platysma, in addition to the skin.

Dr. Sundin will carefully evaluate each patient's unique needs and goals to determine the best approach for their facelift and neck lift and may also recommend additional procedures such as eyelid surgery or brow lift to achieve the desired results. Combining a neck lift and facelift can provide a more natural-looking outcome than undergoing each procedure separately and can reduce overall recovery time. There are also shorter scar more limited operations that are also available for the neck, that Dr. Sundin can discuss during the consultation.

Your Neck Lift Experience

During your consultation, Dr. Reps or Dr. Burton will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan for your neck lift in Richmond. We understand that every patient is unique and don’t ever perform two surgeries similarly. Your neck lift will be performed under general anesthesia and will likely take two to three hours to complete.

Before your surgery, Dr. Sundin will tell you precisely what you can expect regarding incision placement to know what kind of visible scarring you can anticipate once your surgery is complete and the recovery period is over. Dr. Sundin will call upon his extensive experience and do everything he can to make the most minor incisions in inconspicuous locations, ensuring they’re easily hidden once your recovery process is complete.

Your neck lift may include liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue and skin tightening procedures to remove excess skin and reposition the tissues. In some cases, this also involves tightening the neck muscles. Before your surgery, Dr. Sundin will review everything you might need to know about the procedure and your recovery experience. You can enjoy peace of mind while looking forward to your exciting results.

Recovering From Your Neck Lift

You will be given very detailed post-operative instructions to ensure optimal healing before your procedure, and our team will remain available to you throughout your recovery experience.

Swelling and bruising after a neck lift are typical and will mostly subside within a few weeks of your procedure. You will need to wear a compression garment around the neck for several days or weeks after surgery, depending on the extent of your procedure.

Most patients resume work and regular activities within two to four weeks after surgery. You can start enjoying the results of your procedure once the swelling and bruising have dissipated. The incision sites will turn into small scars before fading away.

Following a neck lift in Northern Virginia, take special care to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications. This may include:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for several weeks
  • Avoid exposing the incision site to direct sunlight or tanning beds until it has fully healed
  • Keep the head elevated for the first few days after surgery to reduce swelling
  • Use cold compresses to alleviate swelling and discomfort
  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed
  • Attend follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor healing and progress
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for several weeks after surgery, as these activities can impede healing and increase the risk of complications

Alternative Methods Of Skin Tightening

Alternative skin tightening methods have gained popularity recently as non-invasive or minimally invasive alternatives to surgical procedures. Drs. Sundin offers these methods so their patients have effective ways to rejuvenate their skin without the downtime and risks associated with surgery.

Ultherapy

Ultherapy employs focused ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin. It targets the foundational layers, which are typically addressed in surgical facelifts. Ultherapy gradually lifts and tightens the skin by promoting collagen growth, resulting in a more youthful appearance. The FDA-approved treatment beautifully refines sagging brow, chin, and neck skin.

Renuvion

Renuvion, or J-Plasma, combines radiofrequency energy with helium gas to create a controlled energy source. This minimally invasive procedure can be used with liposuction or as a standalone treatment for skin tightening. Renuvion tightens the skin by delivering energy precisely to the target area, causing immediate contraction and encouraging collagen production for long-term improvements.

BOTOX®

While BOTOX® is primarily recognized for its ability to reduce wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles, it can also provide a subtle skin-tightening effect. BOTOX® injections can be strategically administered to areas with mild skin laxity, such as the jawline or neck, to create a smoother and firmer appearance.

Radiofrequency Microneedling

This advanced treatment combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. Tiny needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, while the radiofrequency heat stimulates collagen production. Radiofrequency microneedling effectively addresses skin laxity, fine lines, and wrinkles, making it a versatile option for skin tightening and rejuvenation.

While these alternative methods may not provide the same dramatic results as surgical procedures, they can be effective for those seeking a less invasive skin-tightening approach. Your options will be reviewed during your consultation, and a customized/individual plan that suits your goals, downtime, and expectations will be developed.
